The project responds to recent trends in flexible housing and workspace. While most residential complexes in New York consist of dedicated dwelling units, our 15-story proposal is a hybrid residential development, featuring a mix of single studios and communal living units.
Located on the narrow strip of land between Manhattan and Brooklyn known as Roosevelt Island, the new development will serve as a catalyst for remote work/live opportunities in New York City. The concept for the building emerges from the dualistic condition of the island and connects the two sides of the site. To the north of the island lies Roosevelt Landing, a peaceful residential community centered around shared amenities, open terraces, and outside gardens. The southern part of the island houses the recently completed research and development hub for Cornell's new Tech campus.
The design strategy proposes a compact, linear strip of apartments that step up along the eastern edge of the site, providing unique views of the river. The sloping rooftop offers access to terraced gardens and circulation pathways. From street view, the building appears as a gradually tapering volume, featuring a patterned grid facade overlooking the river. The building has five main residential entry points that grant access to an elevated garden platform and a communal corridor. Conceived as an interior plaza, the corridor offers open workspace and serves as a thoroughfare along the North-South axis of the site.
